They Just Don''t Get It

The problem actually started much closer to home! We often find that bright ‘techie’ types can be brilliant in solving technical puzzles, but when it comes to solving complex problems – i.e. ones with a mix of technical and human issues – they often struggle.

We devised a series of short two day workshops that essentially helped them learn how to learn. The group of around 180 engineers and project managers often had the answers and solutions within their own people but they didn’t know how to communicate. A small number of them had been experimenting over the years and had devised their own successful approaches to working with their foreign technicians. However, because they were often introverted, quiet, or humble, they weren’t sharing their solutions with others. Our solution introduced communication models with several culturally sensitive adaptations to help the teams not only improve their communication with their vendors, but just as crucially, they learned how to communicate more effectively with each other.

They learned how and when to share, collaborate, challenge, listen, explore, and advocate in ways they’d never done before. One engineer said “learning about how other people see me was the best part of the workshop!” The group learned the value of listening to each other, seeing things from other perspectives, and tackling tough conversations when needed. The best by-product in these modern times of uncertainty however was that these technicians careers were enhanced too, because in a world that changes and shifts so rapidly, techies need these sophisticated people skills more than ever.
